Fishing

Fish walking

I mainly fish for wild Brown Trout in Scottish lochs, during long walks.
I also do some sea fishing, mostly from the shore, in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Loch-caught wild Brown Trout

Wild Scottish brown trout from lochs in Assynt (left), Perthshire (middle) and Wester Ross (right).

FYI: Note the variation in pattern and colouring, which has led to misclassification as different species in the past but in fact they are all one species with local variations, analogous to different breeds of dog etc.

Sea Fish

Caught from the rocks at Leachan Dubh, near Mellon Charles, Wester Ross.

Coley (left); Mackerel (middle); and Pollack (right).

FYI: Pollack and coley are two similar but distinct species of pollack. Coley (Pollachius virens) have a straighter, whitish-coloured lateral line and a noticeably forked tail. Pollack (Pollachius pollachius) have a dark coloured lateral line that curves up markedly over the pectoral fins. They also have a more square tail and can have a golden belly. In my experience, the larger specimens of pollack lose the golden/copper colour and are more easily confused with coley.
